How to Resize an Image for Facebook

Facebook can display many image shapes, but link previews and promotional graphics look most predictable when they use a wide landscape layout. The key is not merely entering dimensions; it is choosing how the original picture should fit inside that new shape.

Use the Facebook preset

1. Choose your image in the image tool.
2. Select Facebook link image — 1200 × 630.
3. Leave the fit mode on Crop to fill for a full-bleed image.
4. Choose JPG for photos or PNG for graphics with crisp text.
5. Export and inspect the preview before posting.

Crop to fill versus fit entire image

Crop to fill uses the whole 1200 × 630 frame but may trim the top, bottom, or sides. It is usually best for photography. Fit entire image preserves every pixel but adds background space when the source shape does not match.

Avoid Stretch unless you intentionally want distortion. It can make people look wider or taller and can warp circles into ovals.

Keep important content away from the edges

Put faces, logos, and essential text toward the center. Different Facebook surfaces may crop or overlay parts of an image. A little breathing room also makes the graphic look less cramped on phones.
